There is no day here.
No light can penetrate
this malaise; it smothers,
it clings to every wall,
every branch, every stone,
every dead stream.
I have returned, here,
to this maze:
A nest of trees,
of ancient brick,
of rotted drift wood,
of stone.
The vines choke every limb
and the power lines buzz
like locust swarms.
I am the queen
of the labyrinth.
I reign over ghosts -
ashes, mud, weeds,
vermin as my court.
I have taken root.
I have penetrated poisoned soil.
There is no escape;
no castles will hide me.
No oceans will have me.
(I traveled far,
hoping Leviathan would drag me under,
but I crashed upon the rocks
and was fed upon by birds.
An old, dead lighthouse
stood in judgment -
it had burned down centuries ago.)
If you find me,
you'll see empty eyes
staring at bleak horizon.
I cannot escape.
I died here long ago.
All roads lead to nowhere,
and all people are hollow.
Nothing remains here;
All is filthy, all is stained,
all are tired, all are stuck here,
rooted to tainted soil.
All are dead.
All are ghosts.
I am the queen
of the labyrinth.
My throne is the garbage I left
before the walls fell,
before the trees burnt,
before the birds died,
before the oceans boiled.
I am the queen.
I am the minotaur.
No gods, no masters,
no slaves, no kings.
I am the alien,
the one from another place.
Pretending to be
human.
We poison ourselves
to mask the pain -
the everlasting sickness
of human being.
I must remain here.
I must feed these vines
as they crawl
towards the infinite
through the mire.
I am the queen
of the labyrinth.
I did not ask to be born,
but here I remain,
bones held together
by electrical wire.
I am the queen.
I am the minotaur.
I am the slug.
